Former Governor Rod Blagojevich Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was convicted in June on 18 counts of corruption charges, including the scheme to peddle the vacated Senate seat of Barack Obama. He was also convicted of trying to shake down hospital and racetrack executives for campaign donations, and of lying to the FBI.  A Federal judge has sentenced the impeached Governor to 14 years in Federal prison.

Prosecutors argued that Blagojevich failed the people of Illinois and instead “further eroded the public’s confidence in government and government officials.”  They asserted that Blagojevich lied, manipulated and used his position to acquire personal benefits, jobs, millions of dollars, and other things for himself in relation to the Senate seat.

Blagojevich must report for prison March 15, 2012, to a facility to be named later.
